At the end of the Ice Age, 14,000 years ago, when the icebergs began to recede to the different poles and the North African climate started becoming warmer, 5 basins that were formed by the icebergs were revealed in the United States’ and Canada’s regions.

These are known as the Five Great Lakes and contain one-fifth of the entire world’s fresh water supply (about the size of Britain!). Water flows through these lakes south to the Atlantic Ocean, and in New York they reach the edge of the Niagara Mountain Ridge that spans the distance of 600 square miles (960 square kilometers), ending in drop that is the Niagara Falls, as they are called by the Indians.
